What is the eligibility required to appear for MAHA TET Exam?


MAHA TET is the teacher eligibility test conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE). It is conducted to test teachers’ eligibility for Classes 1 to 8 in schools of the state. The MAHA TET examination is primarily conducted in two levels- the primary, or paper 1,  and the upper primary called paper 2. All individuals who wish to teach classes 1-5 must clear paper 1, while those who wish to teach post Class 8 are required to appear and clear both papers to qualify as teachers.

The exam is conducted once a year and is a competitive one to crack since the number of candidates appearing for it is incredibly high. Though there are different criteria one needs to qualify to appear the MAHA TET, there are no restrictions on age. Since there are two different MAHA TET papers that candidates may wish to sit for, the criteria for both have been set differently to keep it fair. To be eligible for Primary Classes 1-5  (Paper 1)

Any of the following criteria fulfilled makes one eligible to give the examination:

  • The candidates must have passed the Class 12th examination from a recognised board with a  minimum of 50% marks. Along with this, they must also complete a two-year Diploma in Primary Education (D.T.ED) from a recognised institution of the state. (D.T.ED)
  • The candidate must have passed the Class 12th examination from a recognised board per the National Council of Teacher Education, with at least 45% marks. In addition to this, the candidate should also have a two-year Diploma in Primary Education.
  • The candidate should have passed the 10+2 exam in any stream with at least 50% marks. They also must have passed the four-year B.Ed course on a full-time basis.
  • The candidate should have at least 50% marks in the 12th Board examinations from an approved board. They also should have completed a two-year course in Special Education from an institute recognised by the Government.
  • The candidate must have passed a 2-year Diploma course from an institute recognised by the Government.

To be eligible for Upper-Primary Classes 6-8  (Paper 2)

To appear in this paper, candidates need to clear either of the following criteria:

  • All applicants need to have a 12th Board Examination Certificate as well as a graduate degree. Exactly like Paper 1, candidates need to have a  Diploma in Education (D.Ed) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) to appear in paper two as well.


  • A two-year Diploma from an accredited university and primary education from a recognised institute
  • A degree examination with at least 45% marks from a recognised university as per the National Council of Teacher Education (Regulations, 2002)

To appear both Paper 1 and Paper 2

The requirement for this segment is the same as the one for Upper-Primary Classes 6-8  (Paper 2) Category, i.e.

  • The 12th Board Examination Certificate and a graduation degree, as well as
  •  A Diploma in Education (D.Ed) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed).
